  • Dr. Bailey graduated from Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine in 1992 with a special interest in surgery.  He is a member of the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association. He is a licensed veterinarian in Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina.
  • Dr. Bailey has owned Effingham Animal Hospital since 1998. It is the longest established veterinary hospital in our community. He is also involved in multiple local organizations such as the Rincon, Guyton, Springfield Optimist Club, the Rotary Club of Effingham County, and the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce.

Q:  My dog has been very hyperactive. What would be the reason for that?
A:  Boredom can cause dogs to become hyperactive. Increase exercise and playtime. If there is no improvement after the changes consult your regular veterinarian.

Q:  How old does a dog need to be before starting heart worm preventitive?
A:  They can be started as early as 6 weeks of age. Dogs become susceptible to heartworms between 4 and 6 months of age. It is very important to start them on prevention as a puppy and continue every 30 days for their entire lives.

Q:  My dog has a lump on his stomach that keeps enlarging itself what do you think is causing this and how can it be prevented? I don't have the funds to take him to the vet as of now and need to know the best way possible that I maybe able to handle the problem, I don't want to lose him. Much help appreciated please. Thanks!

Q:  I am looking for a new groomer. Can you tell me if you have a groomer, and if they are well qualified? I want someone who I can trust with grooming my dog.
A:  We  have two groomers one has been grooming for 30 years as of next month. Our second groomer has been grooming for 5 years. We also have someone that only does cats on Thursdays. On Fridays we have someone training that does groomer baths.

Q:  Should supplements be added to my pets diet? Would this cause any harm to his body?
A:  Most quality brand foods are well balanced and a suppliment is not necessary. Contact your regular veterinarian to discuss the type of food your pet is on to determine if any supplements would be necessary.

Q:  When feeding dogs...which would be best to use...major brands of food or generics?
A:  Brands such as Eukanuba and Neutro Max are pet store foods that are good quality. Grociery store brands are Iams and Purina. These foods have more meat and less fillers which make them better for the pet.
