R.E.A.C.H. is a community based collaborative which has indentified a local resource network to improve the behavioral health wellness of the Effingham community through communication, education and advocacy.

Compounding the country's population growth with the economic downturn the need became apparent in 2009 to assess the availability of mental health programs, organizations and services. The assessment's focus was to develop a data base of current services while also identifying the gaps in services. United Way and a number of mental health providers then established R.E.A.C.H. Resources, Education, Advocacy, Communication and Help is a collaboration of more than 20 local mental health care providers.

A:

I'm sorry - I think you have asked the wrong person for this information.  The field that I work with is health and human services.  Perhaps there is another "expert" that could be of assistance to  you and you coule re-ask your question to them.

Q:  I live alone, am retired, and am on a fixed budget. My electric bills have been so high that I'm not sure I can even pay for it this month. I do not like to ask for help, but do not want my electricity to be cut off. Is there any assistance for situations like mine?
A:

With the continueous heat with temperatures of 90 degrees and above for a record breaking time period, utility assistance is the most frequent request for help that we seen in our office.  In a quick survey I took yesterday, of several organizations that in the past have had emergency utility funds, I learned that no one in the Effingham community has any at this time.  When funds are available most organizations require that the account have a "cut off" notice and with that most assistance is in the range of $50 to $150 - given only one time during a 12 month period.  There are several reasons for the lack of funds at this time - with the troubled economy we are seeing a much higher number of households in need; previous donors to these funds are now having to reduce their generosity and cut back on making donations; the Federal Emergency Management Agency has not released any emergency food, shelter or utility funds this year.  I can suggest that if you are a member of a church that you ask for assistance through their benevolent fund.  I also suggest that you contact your utility provider and ask to make payment arrangements and/or ask if you can qualify for their budget billing plan.  Another long term thought would be to check your home's insulation quality or ask for an Energy Audit to be conducted at your home by your utility provider - this is a free service.  Depending on your situation, and if you meet the qualifications, your may want to contact Concerted Services, Inc. at 754-6910, towards the end of this year to see if they have received funding through a special program that can help with the weatherization of your home.

Q:  I have a four year old, who has behavioral problems. We have tried everything to try to get him to do what he is asked to do. Someday's he is totally out of control. I'm afraid that it will be a major problem when he starts school, if something is not done. What can we do, or where can we go for help?
A:

Thank you for your question.  We are fortunate in Effingham to have a collaborative of behavioral health experts who specialize in a variety  of areas.  I would make the following recommendation based on the age of your child, contact Katie McGrory - Play Therapist - at 441-1435.  She is a private practice therapist and is located in the United Way-Effingham Service Center in Rincon.

Q:  I have a brother that is can not drive anymore due to health issues. I have to work full time, and can not always get him to doctor appointments. What services are offered in Effingham that could possibly help?
A:

There is a medical Non Emergency Transportation (NET) service offered through LogistaCare - their contact number is: 1-888-224-7988. If your brother has Medicaid the service will be paid for by Medicaid.

There is also another tranportation service that anyone can access through the Coastal Regional Coaches - np special requirements - by paying $3.00 each way within the county and an additional $3.00 to cross the county line each way. You must call 24 hours in advance to book your seat. That number is: 1-888-543-6744. Exact fare must be paid prior to pickup or at the time of boarding. Drivers can not make change or extend credit for riders,

Both of these services are wheelchair accessible.

Thank you for this question.  I hope this information will be of service to you.
