Q:  I lost my father two years ago, and lost my mother seven months ago. I have been depressed, and have put on weight since we lost her. I seem to be eating or snacking all the time. I have gotten where I do not want to go anywhere in public. My family has started to be worried. How can I get past this depression? Some days I do not even want to get out of bed.
A:

Thank you for your question.  I am so very sorry for your losses.  The symptoms that you described are consistent with the grieving process.  As best defined by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross in her book, On Death and Dying, she identified 5 stages of grief - Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance.  Not all stages are experienced and not necessarily follow a specific order.  Your eating habits might have increased as a form of comfort and coping.  With your family voicing concern for your increasing isolation, it might be time for you to talk with a professional about your depression- and evaluate for medication.  In addition, and most importantly, consider contacting our local Hospice Savannah's Full Circle program located at the United Way in Rincon.  Bereavemnet counselor, Barbara Moss, MSW is an expert in this field and available to meet with individuals- her local contact number is 912-629-1089.  I encourage you to talk with the friends and family in your life- share of your struggles - make an effort each day to write down a few things in your life that you are grateful for- and may your memories of your parents bring you more comfort than pain.  It is a process- giving yourself permission to feel the grief, yet not become stuck in it- which is where counseling would be beneficial.  Take care of yourself, Anisa Grantham.  Rincon Recovery 826-0918.

Q:  How do I encourage my child that being in a gang is not the way to go? She used to be the nice little girl that leads others to what's right...now it seems like she's a follower and folling the wrong crowd.
A:  Thank you for your question.  Spending quality time with a child who has these noticable changes is a starting point.  If a child begins to gravitate toward a gang- the gang itself is often representative of "a family" - a place where the child might feel powerful and important- maybe not feeling that in their own family system.  It's understanding that the gang environment is filling a need.  Identify what has changed within the family system.  You might also consider a drug screen to rule out the onset of drug use.  If you have further questions, please give us a call at Rincon Recovery 826-0918- Thank you, Anisa Grantham

Q:  With all this news about spice and bath crystals, why are people still making a big deal out of smoking weed?
A:  Thank you for your question- I hear you loud and clear!  You are talking to someone who wrote a paper in college on "Legalizing Marijuana"- needless to say, my professor was not impressed and my father wanted to yank me out of school!  The truth is we are making a big deal about it for a couple of reasons - (1) it is illegal and (2) it really is addictive.  Please understand, people die from marijuana use- I recall several news stories over the last few months and few years, where people have been killed or injured when buying marijuana.  Officials want to spend money on meth education- but it's the over the counter/prescription drugs, marijuana, and alcohol that destroy families and take lives.  When a person smokes marijuana, they are risking their freedom- at that very moment- smoking pot is more important than jail- "weed" has more value than their children, their family, and their job/school.  When asking an adult client if they would smoke pot with their teen, they look at me like I'm crazy "heck no, never" is often the response- and then we talk about it- sometimes they are surprised by their own reaction "I wish I never started it"  The marijuana that is out there today is not the same as it was "back in my day"- you've got quality, blend, and hybrid taken into consideration -names like hydro and kush - dont' know what I'm talking about? Rincon Recovery is offering a free Parent Education Class on Saturday March 24- limited seating- registration required - visit www.rinconrecovery.com for details or call Anisa at Rincon Recovery 826-0918.

Q:  What can make a personal drug rehabilitation program or plan more successful?
A:

thank you for your question!  the best plan that will assist in success will need to include personal

accountability.  letting people know what you are doing , your goal for abstinence and what

type of treatment will be involved can make a recovery plan have more "teetgh" in it.  you might

also want to contact a local substance abuse program for assistance in the early stages of abstinence and/oor

attend a 12-step meeting to meet others who can relate to your desire for abstinence.  again, thank you

for your question- if you would like more information, please contact rincon recovery 826-0918- anisa grantham
